Nestled high in the Lazio region of Italy, near the city of Rieti, lies the enchanting medieval village of Greccio. It’s a place steeped in history and spirituality, but it’s best known globally as the birthplace of the very first nativity scene or presepe. If you’re looking for an authentic Italian journey blending history, faith, and stunning landscapes, a visit to Greccio is an absolute must.
The village’s connection to one of Christianity’s most enduring traditions is thanks to one man: Saint Francis of Assisi.
In the footsteps of Saint Francis: the Sanctuary of Greccio
The history of the Greccio nativity begins in 1223. St Francis (San Francesco) had just returned from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Wishing to re-enact the humility and poverty of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, he sought the help of his friend Giovanni Velita, a nobleman from Greccio.
Francis chose a grotto, high on the mountain near the village, and had an ox and a donkey brought there. He celebrated Christmas Mass not with figures, but with real people, creating the first living nativity scene. This act, celebrated by Francis’s biographer Thomas of Celano, is known as the miracle of the crib at Greccio and it marked the beginning of a worldwide tradition.
The exact spot of this sacred event is now home to the Sanctuary of Greccio (Santuario di Greccio), a complex built into the rock face. Visiting the sanctuary allows you to literally walk in the footsteps of St Francis. You can explore the chapel that encompasses the original grotto and see the humble, austere cells where Francis and his companions lived. The silence and the spectacular views over the “Holy Valley” (Valle Santa) are profoundly moving.
The Nativity Scene of Greccio: the birth of a tradition
The legacy of the Greccio nativity scene is most visible during the Christmas season. While the modern tradition is to use sculpted figures, the spirit of the original event endures.
Throughout December and early January, Christmas at Greccio comes alive with its famous historical re-enactment. A multi-scene play tells the story of the first nativity scene, culminating in the dramatic recreation of the 1223 event. This tradition draws thousands of visitors, transforming the quiet village into a vibrant hub of faith and cultural celebration.
Even outside the holiday season, the theme of the nativity is ever-present. The village hosts an International Nativity Scene Museum, featuring presepi from all over the world, showcasing the many ways different cultures interpret the same sacred event.
Greccio: what to see and visit
While the Greccio-St Francis connection is the main draw, the village itself is a charming medieval gem worth exploring.
- The Historic Center: Wander through the narrow, stone-paved streets of the centro storico. The architecture is typical of a fortified medieval town, offering beautiful viewpoints.
- The Tower: Located in the highest part of the town, the remains of the ancient castle tower offer panoramic views of the entire Valle Santa.
- The Presepi Trail: A permanent artistic trail winds through the alleys, featuring murals and installations depicting different scenes from the nativity, turning the entire village into an open-air nativity scene museum.
A visit to Greccio, is more than just a trip; it’s a pilgrimage to the very heart of the Christmas tradition. It’s a chance to connect with history, witness the power of faith, and experience the quiet beauty of an authentic Italian hill town.
